Alezio
This wine produced on the Salento Peninsula, the southernmost part of the Puglia region. Production is mainly concentrated in the area bordering the municipality of Alezio, east of Gallipoli.
Alezio, called in antiquity "Alesium"” is also an important historical and archaeological site. The excavations carried out there are an inexhaustible source of ancient objects and knowledge about antiquity. The wine of the same name is made almost entirely from the one known for centuries, red strain "Negro Amaro"”. This variety was to dominate viticulture in the south of Puglia starting from the sixth century BC.
Without a doubt, the best suitable strain for the production of rosé wine from Salento is Negro Amaro. Often the coupage is supplemented with small amounts of Malvasia Nera. Such a treatment is aimed at softening and softening the taste of wine, which is sometimes too expressive. The wine obtained from these varieties takes on different shades of red, from ruby to dark red with navy blue reflections. There is a pleasant tart note in the bouquet. The name of the Negro Amaro grapevine, derived from the local dialect from the term "niuru maru” it refers to the intense color of wine and the dark color of the grapes.
Almost two centuries ago, in the Salento region, a variety called 'Negro Dolce”, with characteristics that are in complete contrast to those of the Negro Amaro strain.
The name of the wine comes from the town of Alezio, located in the western part of Apulia, on the Ionian Sea, which is very popular among tourists and vacationers. The village is also a fishing port. In the medieval part of the city you can meet numerous vineyards, filled with traditional, red wine from Alezio, that ages very well.
