Colli Orientali del Friuli

Colli Orientali del Friuli

It is the largest wine producer in the entire Friuli region. The production volume is over 60 percentage of total production of DOC wines in the Colli Orientali area.

The dominant grape variety is Tocai Friulano, for which there are ideal conditions for development here.

The origins of the Tocai strain are still under discussion today, but experts agree, that it is grown in Italy, and above all in Friuli for at least two centuries.

The soils found in the colli orientali del Friuli area are a mixture of lime marls and sandstone layers, known as "flysch in Cormonso” (Cormon flysch).

The eastern range of hills formed during the Eocene. Since then, progressive erosion and human activity have finally shaped the landscape, giving it today's gentle character.

Tocai is one of the most widespread varieties of white grapevine. Merlot and Cabernet are the predominant red varieties. The cultivation of the Refosco strain is also becoming increasingly important.

The appeal of the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC is geographically divided into two sub-appeals: Cialla i Rosazzo.
