Hills of Luni

Hills of Luni

Geographically, it is the most northerly DOC appellation in the Tuscany region and the southernmost appellation in the Liguria region. Colli di Luni DOC covers two adjacent regions . On the Tuscan side, the municipalities of Fosdinovo belong to it, Aulla i Podenzana, and the Ligurian contribution is made up of fourteen municipalities adjacent to the Tuscany region. The main grape variety in these upland areas, Vermentino is just a short distance from the Tyrrhenian coast.

The wines produced in this area of Val di Magra were known since antiquity, as confirmed by the Roman historian Pliny the Elder. Their popularity has also survived to modern times, as indicated by, among others. numerous testimonies from the Napoleonic era. Luni wines were also a highly valued commodity, in which Genoese merchants known for their entrepreneurship eagerly invested.

The establishment of the DOC appellation is a tribute to the centuries-old wine-making traditions of these lands, as well as a recognition of the recent efforts made by the winemakers, focused on the improvement of cultivation and production methods. The right to use the DOC appeal was granted to two types of white wine, including one made exclusively from the Vermentino grape and one red wine.
