Hills of Scandiano and Canossa

Recent archaeological discoveries have allowed to place in time the beginnings of viticulture in the areas of today's Emilia-Romagna. Although the origin of the first agricultural settlements dates approximately to approx.. 6000 year BC, the traces found indicate, that the grapevine only began to be cultivated more than four thousand years later, i.e.. about a year 1700 p.n.e.

The merit of the Etruscans, a thousand years later, is to improve cultivation techniques and wine production, as evidenced by numerous items related to wine consumption found in necropolises from that period.

Well cared for, perfectly kept vineyards and high-quality wine were said to make a great impression on the Roman builders of the Via Aemilia road in 187 r.p.n.e..

The wine with the greatest tradition in this area is undoubtedly Bianco di Scandiano, known and appreciated from the fourteenth century. This wine was served to guests, among other things, during feasts organized at the Boiardi family residence, gdzie Matteo Maria Boiardo, hrabia Scandiano, he composed his literary works. It was there that the famous epic poem "Orlando Innamorato.”

Another Italian, a more contemporary poet, Giosué Carducci was also very familiar with the advantages of Bianco di Scandiano, to which he devoted a separate sonnet.
