Cortona

The town of Cortona was founded by the Etruscans. Many traces of this civilization have been preserved in the city to this day., which, apart from numerous excavations,, have been collected in the impressive collection of the Etruscan Museum. He wrote about Cortona in his two books.: "Under the Tuscan sun: At home in Italy” and "Bella Tuscany": Sweet life in Italy” famous American writer Frances Mayes, bringing this charming place closer to the world. Cortona boasts many sights, making their invaluable contribution to the cultural heritage of the region and beyond. Particularly noteworthy are the paintings of Fra Angelico, or John of Fiesole, which can be admired in many churches and on the walls of the Diocesan Museum and the beautiful Renaissance church of Madonna del Calcinaio, built according to the design of a well-known architect, Francesco di Giorgio Martini. From Cortona also came another famous Italian seventeenth-century architect and painter- Pietro da Cortona. Today, the city is home to the elite Scuola Normale di Pisa university and the prestigious academy of fine arts, University of Georgias Lamar Dodd School of Art.

The origins of wine traditions in this region also date back to Etruscan times.. Today, however, the grape varieties grown here are primarily foreign, strains imported from abroad, such as: Cabernet, Merlot, Gamay, Pinot and Chardonnay. Not without influence on the development of winemaking in these areas had the invasion of Napoleonic troops on the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, as well as the fact that the inhabitants of Tuscany are open to abroad is not without significance. Photographs from the early twentieth century show very densely planted vineyards (7,000 bushes per hectare), such as Vigna del Melone, near Cortona, in place, where the village of Camucia is currently located.

The Cortona DOC appeal was established in 1999 year, thanks to the efforts of the best local growers, who improved production techniques and were able to take full advantage of favorable soil conditions and the characteristic microclimate. The appeal covers the area of the municipality of Cortona located at an altitude of approx.. 240 m.n.p.m.
