Alta Langa
The Langhe region stretches from the province of Cuneo to the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. The River Belbo divides it into two parts: the northern one known as Bassa Langa or Langa Domestica and the southern one called Alta Langa or Langa Selvaggia. Alta Langa is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, dominated by meadows, pastures and forests. The so-called. ciabot, small stone buildings, formerly used primarily for the storage of agricultural tools and possibly agricultural products.
The main occupation of the people of this region is sheep breeding and the production of various types of sheep cheese, and viticulture and wine production. The topography and steep slopes preclude traditional farming methods. The landscape is therefore dominated by vineyards arranged in terraces one above the other. Terraces are protected with stone walls.
Recent decades have allowed local winemakers to discover, that their lands create exceptionally favorable conditions for the cultivation of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varieties, which are the basic ingredient in the production of sparkling wines. Years of research and experimentation resulted in the creation of the Alta Langa DOC appellation, which was the first in Piedmont, produces sparkling wines using the fermentation process in an already closed bottle.
