Pisan white wine from San Torpe
BIANCO PISANO DI SAN TORPÉ (DOC)
The Bianco di San Torpé wine production area covers the lands of various municipalities, located in the province of Pisa, Capannori among others, Terricciola, What, Crespina and Casciana Terme, and part of the Cascina and Pontedera sites. In addition, this area also includes part of the territory of the municipality of Collesalvetti, located in the province of Livorno.
The wine is named after the first Christian martyr in Pisa, who was a Roman centurion named Torpé, executed in Pisa by beheading in the year 68. He is now, together with Saint Ranieri, patron of the city. According to the church legend, the saint's body was placed in a boat, which, carried by waves, reached the shores of France in place, where the city of Saint Tropez stands today. The saint's head still rests in the church of Pisa, bearing the name of a martyr.
Bianco Pisano di San Torpé wine has a very long history. The production of white wine in the area between Zambia and Cenaa already existed in the 1st century AD. According to accounts cited by Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti in Annali Camaldolesi, most of the production took place in Curtis San Torpis, which in 780 of the year was donated to the Abbey of San Savino.
The first certain information about the wine produced in these areas dates back to the fifteenth century. In many documents from this period, there are mentions of the appearance on the Florence market of a cargo of Trebbiano wine of outstanding quality, from the Pisan hills. Wine production developed significantly after the creation of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
