Carmignano
Some time ago, a group of winemakers from Carmignano and Poggio a Caiano (province of Florence) has requested that the name 'Chianti” for the wine he produces and the designation of origin 'Carmignano'. This application was approved in 1975 year. A new production specification has been in force since then.
Carmignano wine was first mentioned in the 14th century. There is even a record of 1369 year, from which it follows, that in those days this wine was four times more expensive than other wines on the market. W 1716 Cosmos III Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, issued a decree regulating the rules of wine production, control of the entire production chain, including the sale stage, as well as specifying measures to prevent wine adulteration. The newly created Congregazione di Vigilanza was to supervise the observance of the above regulations. Without a doubt, this was the first wine production specification in Italy. Two and a half centuries later, this document was revisited., to establish a framework for the new Carmignano and to resurrect the "Congregation" for the purpose of protecting and promoting the old designation of origin "Carmignano"” in the areas defined in Decree Z 1716 year.
In the Statute of the Congregation covering 35 Articles with particular emphasis on issues related to the control of wine-growing, as well as quality control of grapes during harvesting and must and wine in vineyards before bottling.
