Cerasuolo di Vittoria
Until a few years ago, Cerasuolo was the only DOC wine produced in the province of Ragusa in Sicily, created in 1926 as a result of changes in the administrative division and the merger of several municipalities belonging to the province of Syracuse. Cerasuolo di Vittoria received the right to use the appeal of the DOC (Designation of origin) w 1973 year, which was then raised in 2005 year to the rank of DOCG (Designation of origin and guaranteed). The production is big enough, to confirm the old ones, wine traditions of the region.
In the 4th century, the Latin grammar Pryscian mentions the excellent quality of wines, which Modica was famous for. Equally valuable wine was made in the vicinity of the town of Camarina, which is confirmed by archaeological discoveries in the form of jugs, whose origin dates back to the 4th-3rd century BC. All these historical testimonies show the wine potential of this region, in which the famous wines of Vittoria were born not by accident, a town founded at the beginning of the 17th century on the initiative of Vittoria Colonna, Duchess of Modica.
At the end of the last century, vineyards in the Ragusa area have been decimated by the plague of phylloxera, which first appeared in Sicily in this region. The damage was substantial enough, that some winemakers have decided to switch to a different type of agricultural production, which would be more resilient to natural disasters and more profitable. The "struggle" between fruit and vegetable production and wine production, after numerous perturbations in the first half of the last century, had found its final conclusion since at least twenty years ago, when the area under vines has stabilized at approx. 7 thousand. he has.
Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG is obtained from the red Frappato grape variety. It was first presented in 1933 year at the Siena Fair. The name comes from the unique color of the wine (on. ceraso– cherry). It is a high-class wine with high aging potential, even to 20 years. Contrary to all conventions, some connoisseurs recommend wine after a longer aging process as an aperitif.
