Alban Hills
South of Lake Albano, in the area including the municipalities of Ariccia, Albano, Pomezia, Castelgandolfo i Lanuvio, famous for its sumptuous patrician villas, there are vineyards between the abbeys and sanctuaries perched on the hills, where Colli Albani wine is produced.
Grapevines have been cultivated here for centuries, and about the local wine Albano, highly valued by patricians, we find mentions in the works of writers of the empire period. Albano is the progenitor of the Castelli Romani wines and, most likely, of today's Colli Albani as well, although the wine-growing traditions in this area are even older. It is believed, that the Latin peoples, which initially settled in the hills, where they founded the city of Alba Longa, later conquered by Rome, worship Jupiter Latiaris by offering him "golden wine".
Over the centuries, Colli Albani wine has retained its reputation and was often written about by famous personalities. To his fame, beyond high quality, fact also contributed, that for centuries the summer residence of the popes has been in Castelgandolfo, that is, in the heart of the region, where it is produced. Certainly, the fresh aroma of Colli Albani wine has delighted many pope and many aristocrats while enjoying the rest, artists and writers, who stayed here.
