Altotiberini Hills
In the Umbria Region, north of the city of Perugia, wine production is concentrated in the Tiber valley, which is named after this river – Upper Tiber Valley. Grapevines are grown here in a vast belt of highlands, extending on both sides of the river. Vineyards take advantage of the excellent exposure of the slopes, and their fruit produces original wines, who obtained the right to use the appeal of the DOC Colli Altotibertini.
In this area, as well as in the whole of Umbria, Viticulture dates back to Etruscan times, as evidenced by the wonderful wine storage vessels, found in Etruscan necropolises. Despite the, that the Umbrian viticulture has such ancient traditions, the first written testimonies about it appeared only in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, he was the papal court physician, Andrea Bacci in his work "De naturali vinorum historia" provided more detailed information about the characteristics of Umbrian wines and regions, where they were made. Bacci has named Alta Valle del Tevere one of the best wine-growing areas in Umbria. His opinion is still shared by many experts, nazywając ten rejon „krainą doskonałych win”.
