Hills of Lucca
The charming hills above the picturesquely situated Lucca are covered with dense green vineyards, which are an inseparable element of the local landscape. It would seem, that the vineyards have always existed here. And actually, grapevines were grown in these areas as early as the Etruscan times. The further development of the vineyards, Lucca region is undoubtedly owed to the Ligurians, who coming to these lands as occupiers, they also brought all their viticulture experience with them. Romans, who came to these areas after the Ligurians, they found agriculture in full bloom, which was the driving force of the entire local economy.
There are many traces in the literature of a flourishing agriculture, including vineyards, in these lands a year ago 1000 neither. Among them you can also find documents, from which it is clear, that the slopes of the hills north of Lucca as early as the ninth century, they were used for the cultivation of vines.
Other sources provide us with information about 168.300 barrels of "clear, clean, noble red wine, which ended up in Lucca in 1334 year, mainly from vineyards located in the surrounding hills. The quality of these wines has captivated many of the famous historical figures. Among them, we should mention Pope Paul III of the Farnese family (period of the pontificate 1534-1549), which since his visit to Lucca, became a faithful lover of wine produced in these areas.
