Barbera d'Alba

Barbera d'Alba

Although the cultivation of the Barbera grape has a very long tradition, the first mentions of it appear only a few centuries ago. They can be found in a document from the 17th century, kept to this day in the town hall in Nizza Monferrato. The variety was first described in more detail only as one of the items included in the systematics of grape varieties grown in the territory of Piedmont., issued in 1798 year by Count Nuvolone, director of an agricultural cooperative in Turin.

Completely unusual for Italian, following in the footsteps of Piedmontese growers, it is customary to use the feminine name of the wine, meaning "la Barbera" instead of "il Barbera". Barbera with her intense red, deep color ,perfectly reflecting his decisive and strong character, is today one of the most valued and most famous wines in all of Italy, inter alia due to the high alcohol potential. The famous Italian oenologist A.. Strucchi was to share the following remark at the end of the last century: “(…) five- or the six-year-old Barbera wine will be an excellent accompaniment to roasted meats, just like Barolo, which many believe is even better”.

Known for their warming properties, the wine was to be used by officers of the Savoyard troops, as a "comrade-in-arms" adding animus to the battlefield at key moments in battles.

Sung by great poets like Carducci and Pascoli, to this day, it enjoys the reputation of a unique wine among a considerable number of connoisseurs.
