Bolognese Hills

Bolognese Hills

Areas extending from the ridge of the Apennines down, towards the Po Valley to Bologna known, in particular, from the production of white wines, are divided into six distinct areas: Monte San Pietro, Colline di Oliveto, Colline di Riosto, Colline Marconiane, Serravalle, Zola Predosa.

The wine centre of the region is Monte San Pietro, located among the hills., from where further the wine production area extends towards the Po, up to the municipality of Cento in the plain area, known as Pianura Bolognese.

Colli Bolognesi is an interesting wine-growing area, with rich traditions. The main varieties grown in this area include: Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pignoletto, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, Riesling Italico and Sauvignon.

Some of the strains recently introduced for cultivation have found here ideal conditions for development. Others have been cultivated in this area since the mid-eighteenth century.

Wines produced in Colli Bolognesi have gained recognition some time ago. Until the outbreak of World War II, wines from the monte San Pietro area, as the most valued and sought after, dictated prices on the market of Bologna and the surrounding area.
