Lanuvini Hills
The wines known as Colli Lanuvini are produced in the area of the municipalities of Genzano and Lanuvio, in the heart of the Castelli Romani area. The wine-growing traditions in these areas are deeply rooted in the minds of local residents. Until not long ago, you could hear, that the release maid is worth a certain number of barrels. This saying is related to the method of clarifying wine in small chestnut barrels practiced in these areas (common in the surrounding forests) medium capacity 1.000 liters. Thus, such a saying meant a candidate for a wife, bringing vineyards to rest, whose annual capacity ensured the filling of a given number of wooden barrels.
Colli Lanuvini wines are made from classic grapevines grown in the Castelli Romani area: Malvasia Bianca i Malvasia Puntinata, Trebbiano Verde i Trebbiano Giallo, Bellone oraz Bonvino. Widespread throughout the Lazio region, the Trebbiano variety and its clones are the basis of white wine production throughout central Italy. You can take it with high probability, that its popularity is the aftermath of a deliberate choice made long ago by the Etruscans, who made a significant contribution to the development of winemaking in these lands.
Like other wines from around Rome, Colli Lanuvini have had their devoted admirers since antiquity, great masters of the pen, who celebrated in their works their superiority over other wines from the Castelli area. They include, among others, the Latin poets Horace, Pliny and Marcjalis. In the Baroque era, when the papal court achieved its greatest splendor, the poet Pietro Metastasio wrote about the superiority of the Colli Lanuvini wine.
