Hills of Levanto
Not so long ago, looking closely at the DOC wine list, it was possible to come to a conclusion, that the area between the Cinque Terre and Riviera del Ponente in Liguria is a true wine wasteland. However, when we go on a car journey through the picturesque, the coastal road connecting Cinque Terre with Genoa, our eyes will see a breathtaking view of vineyards climbing on the slopes of the cliff, which continue uninterruptedly as far as the hills above Genoa.
Geographically, the Colline di Levanto DOC area is a natural continuation of the Cinque Terre, and it has very similar soil conditions, climatic, it has a similar arrangement and varietal composition of vineyards. Of course, that the wine produced here, just like the product from Cinque Terre, it is the source of the most wonderful experiences for the palate.
The dominant grape variety in this area is Vermentino. This strain, like no other, it can perfectly adapt to the specific soil and climatic conditions occurring here. Vermentino thrives on the poor, sun-baked soils, exposed all year round to a gentle breeze, sea breeze. The wine obtained from the grape variety has a straw color with green reflections, a delicate and long-lasting bouquet with an intense aroma. Delicate with a slight hint of acidity, leaves pleasant, bitter aftertaste.
Except for white wine, light red wines made from the Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo varieties are also entitled to use the name Colline di Levanto. The same strains are used in the production of the most successful on the market, new Novello wine.
