Alcamo or White of Alcamo

Alcamo ranks third in terms of wine production volume in the province of Trapani. The total area used for viticulture in the province of Trapano is 83.750 ha and is the largest wine production area not only in Sicily, but also throughout Italy.

The land in the Alcamo area is brown, clay and usually fertile. Nevertheless, soil fertility is not the rule in these areas.. This obstacle was overcome thanks to the inventiveness and ingenuity of local growers., who for centuries of development of winemaking in these areas were able to adapt cultivation techniques to local realities. Viticulture accompanying the inhabitants of the Trapani region for generations, is an important part of their culture and history. The soil is mechanically moved throughout the growing season. Around the main trunk of the vine, the ground moves by hand, to ensure better air access to the roots. Such a solution has been developed through experience, even before it was described and scientifically confirmed.

Viticulture has a long-standing tradition in the Trapano area. Alcamo was known for the quality of its wines long before the nineteenth century, when it is wine, due to the high alcohol content (13%-17%), was particularly in demand in the market of northern Italy for the production of vermouth.

Thanks to the regular improvement of viticulture techniques over the last thirty years , producers have managed to significantly reduce the level of alcohol contained in wine. Wine is the perfect complement to seafood dishes. Bianco Alcamo is a perfect example of this, what can be achieved by skilfully combining tradition with modernity, what is the basis of its success in winemaking in this region.

Obtaining in 1972 THE YEAR OF THE RIGHT TO APPEAL DOC encouraged wine producers to continue their efforts to improve product quality. These activities brought measurable results in the form of an increase in the level of sales. Wine is today a real star of Sicilian winemaking.
