Barbera d'Asti

Barbera d'Asti

Although the cultivation of the Barbera grape has a very long tradition, the first mentions of it appear only a few centuries ago. They can be found in a document from the 17th century, kept to this day in the town hall in Nizza Monferrato. The variety was first described in more detail only in the systematics of grape varieties grown in the territory of Piedmont, issued in 1798 year by Count Nuvolone, director of an agricultural cooperative in Turin.

Barbera is a strong wine, usually with a rather spicy and refined taste and a full aroma. For this wine, quite unusual for Italian, in line with the Piedmontese tradition, used the feminine name, or "la Barbera". Today it is known and highly valued all over Italy, inter alia due to the high alcohol potential.

The first poet to praise Barber's name was Giosue Carducci, who called the wine "generous" in thanks for his strength and courage, which he adds to everyone, who will taste it. The more contemporary poet Cesare Pavese, describing the wine in one of his letters, he describes it as "legendary". Even today, Barbera is synonymous with the highest quality for many experts.
