Hunts mmitte of Lucera
CACCE MMITTE DI LUCERA (DOC)
The unusual name of this wine, the production of which is located in the area of Lucera communes, Troia and Biccari in the province of Foggia, is derived from an expression, functioning in the dialect of these communes. It means pouring wine directly from the barrel into the goblet, which is then emptied immediately and refilled quickly.
Lucera, situated on a hill on the Gargano promontory, it is known throughout Italy for its outstanding wines and unique history.
Frederick II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, who ruled Apulia in the 13th century, he often transferred Arabs to Lucera, who lived on his Sicilian possessions. He considered them a people who wreak havoc, but because they were also his best fighters, he personally took care of their well-being.
W Luceria of the Saracens (Lucera Saracenów) so mosques and harems appeared, and the population of the city, counting 60.000 people, it consisted almost entirely of Muslims, which was a sizeable enclave for those times. Near 500 years after the death of Frederick II, Charles II d Anjou killed almost all the Muslims and gave the city of Lucera a new one, Christian name – City of Santa Maria, which, however, quickly fell into disuse.
Paradoxically, despite the restrictions, concerning the consumption of alcoholic beverages, which are valid in the Muslim religion, Lucera's vineyards – starting from the 10th century – they were especially well cared for, and wine production in that area had experienced only a few less prosperous spells.
