Cisterna d Asti
Cisterna dAsti is a small town located in the heart of the region with rich agricultural traditions, known in particular for the cultivation of vines. As the legend goes, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, preparing to attack the fortress at the very top of the hill, was supposed to take the climbing rows of vines for the enemy army and immediately order his troops to retreat.. Nevertheless, before he withdrew, he decided to quench his thirst by drawing water directly from a nearby spring, which has since been named after him. The legend has been immortalized in a beautiful fresco, which can be admired in the nearby church of St.. Gerwazego. It is one of the oldest surviving testimonials confirming the centuries-old tradition of winemaking in this region.
In more modern times, we find the praise of the poets in honor of Bonard's vine, the variety known today as Croatina, which combined with fertile, rich in calcium, sandy-loamy soils occurring in these areas, gives wine with a unique personality.
