Ciro’

Ciro 'is the most famous Calabrian wine, created in vineyards located on picturesque hills, along the coast of the Ionian Sea, in the area of ​​Ciro ', Ciro ’Marina, Melissa i Crucoli. Ciro 'Marina was built on the site of the former Greek colony of Cremissa, in which there was an important temple in honor of Dionysus. The ancient human settlement was roughly halfway between Sybaris and Croton.

City of Sybaris, located on the Ionian Sea, was founded in 720 roku b.c. and razed two centuries later, w 510 r.p.n.e. by the invaders from Croton, with which it has fought fiercely since its inception. In the short period of its heyday, Sybaris was the center of the wine trade. It is believed, that at that time there was also a real "guilty pipeline". This construction, made of terracotta pipes, it was used to transport wine from the higher parts of the land directly to the docks of the local port. In this way, it was possible to save on the costs of land transport, which at that time was very expensive.

The ancient name of Calabria, which was adopted later for all of southern Italy, to Enotria, that is, "the land of vineyards located high above sea level.” How valuable was the wine from Calabria, you can find out by studying the records placed on stone tablets from Eraclei, whose origin dates back to 4 w.p.n.e. According to this ancient message, plot, on which vines were grown was six times more valuable than an ordinary plot sown with grain.

Ciro 'is one of the oldest Italian wines. They are produced from the same grape varieties, which were used in antiquity to produce Cremissa wine, made famous throughout the ancient world as a gift given to the gods in gratitude by the winners of the ancient Olympics. Referring to the ancient tradition, the organizers of the Olympics in Mexico City in 1968 year, as an addition to the meal of all participants of the competition, they were serving Ciro wine.
