Agro Pontino is a unique case in the history of viticulture in Italy. For millennia, vast swamps have prevented the development of agriculture in the area.. Only in the first half of the twentieth century., as a result of a political decision and with the use of huge resources, extensive drainage works were carried out, which made it possible to allocate new fertile land for agricultural activities.

The cultivation of vines in these plains has been focused on achieving high quantitative and qualitative results in a short time., thus, the spatial formation method was used, parallel to the ground (the so-called. „marquee”) and such reliable varieties as: Trebbiano, Sangiovese or Merlot.

Recent reduction in domestic consumption, slowdown in exports to markets, which decided about the expansive development in the years 70, but most of all the growing expectation for better quality wines resulted in this, that local producers switched to other crops and restructured their farms.

In recent years, many vineyards have been liquidated, in others, the traditional method "marquee" replaced by a row form, while increasing the density of plantings per hectare. Almost every farm has separated experimental plots cultivated under the direction and supervision of research institutes at universities. Innovations are being introduced throughout the territory, the specific results of which can be assessed during the tasting of wines from the last harvest.
