CANDIA OF THE APUAN HILLS (DOC)

The Candia dei Colli Apuani wine production area extends on the slopes of the hills around Massa and Carrara. Viticulture in these areas, where agriculture has always been an important source of community economic development, goes back to ancient times.

In the Bulletin of the Agriculture Commission for the Massa area, which was published in 1874 year, it is stated, that "viticulture has flourished in our community since ancient times." Additionally, Repetti, describing in his Dictionary of 1832 of the year, the products made in the hills of Massa speak of "vineyards laid out on the terraces", while – discussing Carrara – mentions “olive trees and vines growing in this area, which are the main agricultural resources of this area. "

The roots of the Candia dei Colli Apuani wine – highly appreciated by Paolo Ferrari, active politician of the Duchy of Modena, to which Massa once belonged, and by the poet Giovanni Pascoli, who taught at the high school of the humanities there - go back to ancient times. Bulletin from 1874 year, in which the first information about the production of this wine and the varieties used were published, clearly shows the dominance of the Vermentino strain.

The term Candia, which was the name of a small area on the slopes of Mount Oliviero, formerly known as Libero, began to be applied to wines, from these areas about a hundred years ago.
